On Tuesday, March 8th (International Women’s Day), a friend and I decided to go out for a night on the town. We decided to go to the Hilltop (Fredericton, NB). When we entered, the bouncer was holding several strands of plastic shiny beaded necklaces. I asked him if I could have one and he replied, “It’s Mardi Gras sweetie, show me your tits and you’ll get one.” I was shocked and offended, I told him that was sexual harassment and walked away. As I went to put my coat away I realized that every man had at least one necklace on. On the dance floor I was asked several times to expose my breasts, in return for a plastic necklace, even from the DJ. I went to the restroom to try to cool off. On my way out, in front of me were three men negotiating with one woman what she would have to do to get all of their necklaces, at this point I had enough. I found my friend and left. Earlier that evening I had attended the International Women’s Day potluck where I was inspired by the many women in attendance who had struggled for equality before me. People often ask if we really still need feminists and a women’s day. It is events like the Hilltop’s Mardi Gras which points to why my answer has always been yes.
