About darn well time.

quote:
SANTIAGO : A court stripped former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet of his immunity and said he could be prosecuted for his role in Operation Condor, a coordinated operation among the former military governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay to eliminate left-wing opponents.

The decision by the full Santiago Appeals Court came after a 14-9 vote in favor of the move.

Though Pinochet, now 88, has resigned from his post as a senator for life, the former dicator who ruled with an iron fist from 1973-1990 had been protected by immunity lawmakers gave him as an ex-president.

That's good news. At least I hope it is. Family members of the disappeared were having their requests for forensic investigations denied or simply lost by the former dictator's bureacrats.

A Venzuealan journalist said they could hear the screams of government workers being executed in the east wing of Santiago stadium. In the morning, Pinochet's people were seen hosing the blood stains from the stadium's various interrogation chambers. A pile of shoes worn by the disappeared were dispensed of. In Argentina, pregnant socialists who didn't abort on the torture tables were paraded infront of military personel for adoption. Priests were given the task of comforting those pilots who might have second thoughts about flying thousands of blindfolded socialists and union leaders out over the Pacific Ocean and returning empty for more.

May Augusto Pinochet's blood scream for all eternity, tha ba$tard.

More important than his actual trial, which is irrelevant in reall world of today, is that fact that will officially discredit his leagcy. Bastard that he is.

In surprise ruling, Chilean court says Pinochet fit for trial

quote:
SANTIAGO, Chile

A court ruled yesterday that Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile, can be sued for a bloody wave of repression in the 1970s and '80s, after a TV interview in which he appeared lucid raised questions about Supreme Court rulings that he is unfit for trial.

The 14-9 vote by the Santiago Court of Appeals startled attorneys on both sides of the case, as well as victims' families. Prosecution attorney Juan Subercasseaux called the ruling "a miracle."

"We receive this with deep surprise but also with deep pride," said Francisco Bravo, the chief prosecution attorney. "This ruling makes the relatives of the victims and the whole of Chilean society again trust Chile's justice."

This is excellent, however:
quote:
[Pinochet's] attorney said he would appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, which has repeatedly said that Pinochet, 88, cannot stand trial because of poor mental and physical health.

Fuck. Ing. A.

Now it's a race between Lady Justice and the Grim Reaper.

The sweat must be beading profusely on Henry Kissinger's brow today.

Doc, your original link isn't working. There has been quite a bit of coverage in the Guardian, and usually their links remain current. I'd love to see Kissinger in the dock ... He must be shivering indeed. At least one of the Argentine junta (Galtieri) has died. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,6903,1227842,00.html
