quote:
(Sydney) For the first time an out lesbian is sitting in the upper house of New South Wales, the state that is home to Sydney.

Penny Sharpe was chosen to fill the seat vacated by her former boss, Carmel Tebbutt, when he decided to run for the Lower House.

Sharpe has never been secretive about her sexuality and is in a long-term relationship, but she says "don't tread on my private life". Her partner is Jo Tilly, the former aide to another member of the state's upper house.

"Yes I am gay. Yes I have two children," she told reporters. "Beyond that I don't see it as being an issue."

When asked by one reporter how her children, aged six and 13 months, were conceived, she told him that it was none of his business.

"No other parliamentarians are asked about their families and how their children are conceived and I don't see why I have to.

[...]

Sharpe said that she hopes to strengthen the rights of gay and lesbian parents. She said she wants the Status of Children Act changed so that both mothers in a lesbian relationship, not just the biological mother, are legally recognized as parents of their children.

Can you believe the nerve of that friggin' reporter?!?!

Question: how do Australian babblers feel about the word "Oz" in reference to Australia? Is it like "'Frisco" which makes the skin of everyone in San Francisco crawl, or did, when I was there?

It just reminds me of The Wizard of.... It always takes me a minute to realise that it's supposed to mean "Australia".

(And, yes, it does make my skin crawl. )

It's a short and sweet abbreviation, I'm not particularly fussed about it but I don't love it either.
Actually when I see it I automatically think of a song from the ?80's 'Living in the Land of Oz' by Mondo Rock.

Actually Suzette, I agree, it makes my skin crawl too. The 80's is a decade best forgotten.

Come on, you were there too. Yes yes, I know Brisbane has the Go-Betweens to boast, but we had and have the best AND the worst that AOR has to offer.

AOR?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

Nup, still can't work it out.

Oh, mate, I was there; never a fan of that particular lot, but plenty of shameful vinyl lurks in my cupboard.

Since this is an officially Australian thread I won't be hijacking it too much by asking you if you heard that our city's on fire?

Man, it's going to be a lo-o-o-ong summer.

No, sorry I didn't hear. Actually, I don't know the north west of the city at all.
Nevermind, you can come down south - "FRIDAY: Rain extending from northwest. Cool with light winds. Top of 17c.
I'm waiting for a bit of warmer weather to put my tomatoes in.

VAGUER FM. Dear me.

Sounds like it's time for you to start dressing like -- and attempting to talk like -- a fifteen year old. Actually, I heard Iggy Pop interviewed on Triple J yesterday -- rest assured that not all over-40s like Elton John.

Do fifteen year olds talk? If they do I don't understand their language.

Spoken like a true Baby boomer.

Bedtime now - nighty night.
