In the spirit of International Women’s Day

Sisters Doing It for Themselves: Celebrating Muslim Women Organizing March 6th 2008 @ Noor Cultural Centre, Toronto.

Are you a Muslim woman interested in mobilizing and organizing?

Are you a performer, spoken word artist, visual artist, or a community activist interested in celebrating Muslim women mobilizing?

With eroding civil liberties, the war in the Afghanistan / Iraq, apartheid in Palestine, genocide in Sudan and political upheaval the world around, how are Muslim women and girls organizing and working towards building peace and justice?

Sisters Doing It for Themselves: Celebrating Muslim Women Organizing will be an evening of poetry, performances, and visual art by Muslim women to discuss how our art, politics, and faith intersect with issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class. It aims to create a space for Muslim women to share multitudes of lived experiences, recognize the challenges of organizing, and celebrate our successes.

We are seeking visual art and performance pieces of 5-10 minutes from Muslim women highlighting their struggles and successes. Please send submissions and questions to [email protected]

This event will take place
Thursday, March 6, 2008
6:30pm – 10:00pm
Noor Cultural Centre @ 123 Wynford Drive
(Go to Eglinton station, take bus #100 to 123 Wynford Drive).

Please note we respect that artists are often struggling to make a living and will make an effort to compensate performers with donations.

This event is being organized and endorsed by a coalition of individuals and community groups including Noor Cultural Centre, Toronto Women’s Bookstore, Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Enterprises, Our Collective Dreams, among others.

For queries, submissions, rants, chants, please send an email to [email protected]
