In a statement sent today to the Arabic language daily al-Hayat, the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the Madrid bombings that killed 201 people, also urged its European units to stop all operations.

"Because of this decision, the leadership has decided to stop all operations within the Spanish territories... until we know the intentions of the new government that has promised to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq," the statement said.

Well, that's very sporting of them. Now all everyone has to do is give the terrorists what they want and we can all sleep soundly. Great optics it leaves for the new government though: do they want to be accused of kissing up to the U.S., or kissing up to Al-Qaeda?

But wait! Isn't this supposed to be a war on the lawless violence of terrorism? I do recall this thing in Iraq is supposed to be associated with the War on Terrorism. No?

Look: the Spanish a figured out a unique way to win that war.

A tactical truce with Spain and like-minded countries could be advantageous to Al Quaeda & Co. as a way of isolating the US.

On the other hand, maybe another massacre could get the Spaniards out of Melilla and Ceuta. Why quit when you're on a roll?

I think this is the group that first claimed responsibility by contacting an English newspaper -- they have in the past also claimed responsibility for, eg, last summer's blackout in eastern North America.

This one?

quote:
Praise be to God who gave us this victory in the conquest of Madrid... where one of the pillars of the axis of Crusader evil was destroyed,

It's a little on the bombastic side (pun not intended) but that's what I've come to expect from "communiques" from radical types.

There's more to that statement that wasn't quoted in the link above: click

quote:
The statement tells American voters that Abu Hafs al-Masri supports the re-election campaign of U.S. President George W. Bush: "We are very keen that Bush does not lose the upcoming elections."

Addressing Bush, it says: "We know that a heavyweight operation would destroy your government, and this is what we don't want. We are not going to find a bigger idiot than you."

The statement said Abu Hafs al-Masri needs what it called Bush's "idiocy and religious fanaticism" because they would "wake up" the Islamic world.

Comparing Bush with his Democratic party challenger, John Kerry, the statement tells the president: "Actually, there is no difference between you and Kerry, but Kerry will kill our community, while it is unaware, because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish infidelity and present it to the Arab and Islamic community as civilization."

Hmm. If this isn't a hoax, it tends to confirm my long-standing belief that the Islamists are the biggest Bush supporters on planet earth.

Hard to argue with the "bigger idiot" part, though, isn't it?

You mean, not invade Islamic countries? What an unconscionable concession! Never!
