Just ran into this little jewel on the local CBC site.

Calgary Police purchase semi-automatic weapons.

The comments are much more enlightening than the story itself. The best analogy I can think of is overhearing an audio or computer equipment salesperson "talk shop".

Maybe this is the reason Jack went all gung-ho on law and order when talking in Edmonton earlier today.

You make it sound like semi auto rifles are a bad thing. What do you think the police force should use spitball shooters? Just cuz you are anti gun doesn't mean we have to not have them. I'm anti union so we should not have them as well right?

Um, Kdrunkin1, maybe you're in the wrong forum.

Police having the firepower to mow down suspects with semi-automatic rifles at 135 metres is not something I support.

And you're anti-union? Yeah, you're in the wrong place.

My little sister was in her first year with the police force in Southern Ontario a few years ago. She saw some awful violence. She told me about one person that was involved in a drug deal gone bad. He came running out of an apartment building to her and her partner just arriving on the scene. The guy was as frantic as he was big. Sis and her partner walked into the apartment in question, and the victim had been gutted from stern to stem with a big hunting knife. The guy they'd just questioned outside in the parking lot did it.

Action video of Matti Juhani Saari, the white male gun lover who shot and killed 10 students and himself in Finland yesterday. He had been interrogated by the police after posting on Youtube videos of himself shooting his gun outdoors, but the officers saw no reason to confiscate his weapon(s). After they left, he posted another video of himself discharging his gun near the camera and stating "You will die next". Still, no police action.
This mass murder happened almost exactly one year after another Finn gun buff, Pekka-Eric Auvinen, shot up a school killing eight people after posting a video of himself with his gun on Youtube announcing his intentions.
One also thinks of the Polytechnique, Columbine and Dawson College massacres. There have been many more such killings, with less and less public outrage.
Cuz hey, who are we to "take the toys away from the boys"? Let's just buy more firearms for the police and have a great showdown - film at eleven...

Just a little something to add perspective:

Tuesday's shooting echoed another in November last year in the town of Tuusula, which left eight people and the lone gunman dead.

Both gunmen had valid licences.

Although Finland said it would consider new laws after that attack, no changes have been made and 15-year-olds can still own guns.

The country has a long tradition of hunting and weapons-bearing, with about 1.6 million firearms in private hands - third in the world behind only the US and Yemen, studies say.
