Turkish General Accused in Bookshop Bombing

quote:
The case involves the bombing of a bookstore last November in the town of Semdinli in which three suspects were seized and nearly lynched by crowds who suspected them of being agents sent by the military to stir up trouble.

The three turned out to be members of a paramilitary force operating under the Interior Ministry. General Büyükanit acknowledged knowing one of the suspects, who had served under his command, describing him as a "good fellow."

His remark was noted by Mr. Sarikaya, who is bringing charges against the men, accusing them of carrying out illegal activities as undercover agents of the paramilitary force.
