Asia Times quote: KARACHI - A plot to stage a coup against Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf soon after his recent return from the US has been uncovered, resulting in the arrest of more than 40 people. Most of those arrested are middle-ranking Pakistani Air Force officers, while civilian arrests include a son of a serving brigadier in the army. All of those arrested are Islamists, contacts in Rawalpindi, where the military is based, divulged to Asia Times
quote: This is just one glimpse of upcoming events as a result of Musharraf's pro-American policies, which are in contrast to the thinking pattern of Pakistan's state institutions," said retired squadron leader Khalid Khawaja, a former ISI official who went to Afghanistan after his forced retirement and fought alongside Osama bin Laden against Soviet Russia in the 1980s. (Khawaja features on Musharraf's list mentioned above.)
quote: These people, both in uniform and out, have in turn given their reponse: they are not prepared to throw away all the gains that have been made in Afghanistan.

quote: Originally posted by sidra: Dictators (in Pakistan and elsewhere) are opposed by more than just the "Islamists". But of course, it is very convenient to label any opponent of a pro-US regime as "Islamist". It appears that on the political scene of the islamic world only Islamists are players! Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and what have you. Sheesh!
In the context of this particular coup attempt, the quote: quote: All of those arrested are Islamists, contacts in Rawalpindi, where the military is based, divulged to Asia Times
states the fact that all those arrested are Islamists. The article does not contend that all Islamists are involved in this coup attempt rather it states that all those arrested are.

Hmmm...it is odd that an officer in an airforce sophisticated enough to have missiles that are programmable with a cell phone would use his own personal number to direct the missile at the coupee's residence.
The haste in which the suspects are all cosidered "Islamists" will play well across the pond in the Great Satan. Pervez the Idefatigible survives once again and illustrates just how difficult it is to poodle-up in Pakistan.

I'm sure it is merely coincidence that those pesky airforce chaps are also helping with book sales.A well publicised mutiny at the end of the book tour grip'n'greet. Over the top cynicism is almost as much fun as over the top sarcasm.
