I'm so excited - tonight's the night! My baby's first soccer game! He gets his uniform tonight.

Clockwork said this in another thread:

Ha! Yeah, I'm sure the coach and the other parents will think it's so cute when your son fumbles the ball or misses a shot. I used to play soccer up until I was 10, and my parents pulled me out because of the offensive language of the coach and the behaviour of the other parents.

Yeah, a friend of mine with a couple of teenage kids (who have been playing soccer since they were 3 or 4) told me that it pretty much depends on the team when it comes to that. The coaches in the Kingston league, at least, seem to be really fun-oriented, particularly with the little kids on the youngest teams. I went to some of my friend's kids' games last year, and they had a pretty good set of parents on that team.

However, a couple of the teams they PLAYED had HORRIBLE parents. My friend's older son was one of the "stars" of his team, and it almost seemed in one game like the players were instructed to take him out. The parents on the other team cheered when some kid fouled him so hard he had to go to the hospital to have his shoulder and arm taken care of, and my friend overheard the coach tell the kid who fouled him, "good work". Nice.

So I'm not under any illusions about the game. But I think at Amir's age, it's pretty much just about getting out there and running around with the ball. I'll know for sure after tonight! My Dad says it's really cute to watch the little tykes try to play - he watches his wife's grandkids play occasionally and he says it's pretty fun.

The other end to that story is middle-aged (or older) soccer. Seeing a Chilean exile friend, well into his 50s, playing actually rather well on a team in a Latin-American league in Montreal.

I have not yet succeeded in getting my cat Renzo to play by the rules, not only does he use his front paws as well as the rear one, he also carries the ball around in his teeth.

I see that my felinoid cousins have matters well in paw when it comes to ball games.

Ha! Doug, that's not QUITE what I meant by "baby soccer". Hee hee.

Well, last night went well. But lucky me, my kid was the one who went off and picked flowers in the other end of the field; my kid was the one who went to the keeper's net on the other side of the field and played with the net for half the game; my kid was the one who, every time the ball came near him, picked it up and yelled triumphantly, "I got it!" My kid was the one who rough-housed with the other kids, being used to wrestling with Daddy and not realizing that the other kids thought he was fighting with them.

Every funny thing you hear about a little kid doing in preschool soccer was MY kid yesterday. It was pretty funny, but there were at least 10 times where I thought, "Why does it always have to be AMIR?" He was so often the only kid who didn't join the group in warm up stretches, etc. He kept wandering off, or doing something else.

Well, maybe that's a good sign - he marches to his own drummer! Sigh.

Other parents laughed and told me to buy a storybook called "Froggy Plays Soccer" - it's all about a little frog around Amir's age who plays soccer for the first time, and the main moral of the story is, DON'T USE YOUR HANDS.

Quite.
