Hmmm... maybe it IS catching... first Spain, now Portugal

quote:
(Lisbon) A Portuguese lesbian couple on Wednesday applied for a marriage license in what is believed to be the first application by a same-sex couple in the country.

The women filled out the application and submitted it, but they said they expected they will be notified later in the week that it has been rejected.

Portugal's civil code bans same-sex marriages, but gay and lesbian couples have some rights - mainly in the areas of tax benefits.

Once they receive the official notice they've been turned down they will go to court the women told reporters outside the public building in Lisbon.

"Our desire to get married is just as strong as heterosexual couples," 28 year old Teresa Pires said, as she held the hand of her partner, Helena Paixao, 35.
