first female winner in IndyCar history

quote:
MOTEGI, Japan–Danica Patrick was always sure a woman could win a race. And now the questions about her will surely stop.

Patrick made it to the place she wanted to be for so long – Victory Lane. She became the first female winner in IndyCar history Sunday, capturing the Indy Japan 300 in her 50th career start.

"I'm glad it finally happened," the 26-year-old driver said. ``But I would be lying if I told you I didn't think it would be me.''

Good for Danica!

There's been four or five women I can think of that have been in the Indy 500 - one of the premiere races in North America: Janet Guthrie, Lyn St. James, Sarah Fisher. Danica Patrick raced in the 500 twice.

Another notable woman driver: Shirley Muldowney - the first woman to win a Top Fuel drag racing title and the first driver of either sex to win three world titles.

(my mother drag raced the family sedan in the 1960s)

ETA: car racing is NOT environmentally friendly - one of the reasons I stopped following motorsport long ago.

For someone that stopped following motorsport, "a long time ago", you are very up to speed, on current drivers such as Patrick and Sara Fisher.
Worth adding that Katherine Legge has won recently at the Formula Atlantic level, just one rung below the two Major level open wheel series, Indy Car and the now officially defunct, Champ Car series.

I read Car and Driver online, just for the articles about cars, not motorsport, but some headlines you just can't avoid.

The last Formula 1 winner I can recall cheering on was Jackie Stewart - and I don't even remember what year he last won the F1 championship.

ETA: my mother was a huge fan of F1 winner Emmerson Fittipaldi.

I'd feel a lot better about her win if she wasn't taking paycheques from GoDaddy for horribly sexist ads.

She's no role model, I can tell you that.
