News 24:
quote:
Abuja - A local disciplinary committee on Thursday in the Niger Delta ordered the caning of six teenage girls for unspecified same-sex behaviour....

The girls, between 12 and 17-years-old, were sentenced to 90 strokes of the cane each for their "shameful and abominable act".

I am praying that, as in so many of these cases we have heard of in the north of Nigeria, these sentences will be stayed in the capital.

I'm not in touch with the local liberation groups, but I know they're there and they want our support, not our condescension.

We should just start a single thread on ALL these types of stories, and call it "Nigeria: the latest bullshit from the reactionaries"... it'd save on thread proliferation...

If there were world enough and time, Heph, I would do some research on Nigeria ... Things are hard there, and yet not as hard as they have been. It seems to me one of those places we have to engage if we are commenting at all.

There are places that give us much less hope.

I SO AGREE. I mean, about the thread proliferation. But yeah, the reactionaries thing too.

Vanguard:
quote:
JOS—A self-confessed homosexual has been arrested by security agents in Plateau State while seeking audience with Governor Joshua Dariye posed as a lady.

The 19-year old identified as Benita Amaechi Anatogu was picked up when ‘her’ weird looks caught the attention of vigilant security aides of the governor who suspected him to be fake and decided to question 'her’ following which ‘she’ confessed to being a male but a gay.
