I went to this picket tonight because there was someone I wanted to interview for a story I wrote for rabble (it'll be published this coming week). So I took some pictures and video and thought I'd post them here.
UNITE HERE is a fantastic union, from what I've been hearing about it during the last year or so. They're militant and fight hard for some of the hardest workers in our society - hotel workers, textile workers, etc. Their hotel campaign over the past couple of years in Toronto has been positively inspiring.
Right now, they're attempting to organize the concession workers at the Rogers Centre who work Blue Jays games. The baseball players' association is fully supporting the union drive. Hope they're successful!
Anyhow, here's a video of the picket today at the Holiday Inn on King. The issue is that they haven't had a contract for almost a year, and management refuses to agree to the standards that the other UNITE HERE hotels in Toronto have. They plan to picket for a couple of hours every day until they either get a contract, or go on a full strike.
