The series could not have aired without being condoned by Iran's clerical leadership. The state broadcaster is under the control of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khomenei, who has final say in all matters inside Iran.

Moderate conservatives have been gaining ground in Iran, where there is increasing discontent with the ruling hardliners over rising tensions with the West, a worsening economy and price hikes in basic commodities.

The government even allowed the series to break another taboo in Iran: For the first time, many actresses appear without the state-mandated Islamic dress code. The producers wanted to realistically portray 1940s Paris, and thus avoided the headscarves and head-to-foot robes that all women must normally wear on Iranian TV.

So are they "making the economy scream" in Iran or what's the deal? We should probably think the hawks will want to downplay the film and rhetoric about sanctions on Iran. Apparently if it wasn't for Cheney's former company Halliburton, Iran wouldn't be able to make weapons grade plutonium today. Capitalists will deal with the devil and cock hind legs up in any old port in a storm.

One wonders if the sabre-rattling Iran has engaged in (not alone, of course) has been as unpopular with the people as that of Bush with many Americans.

They are -- there have been several terrorist attacks within Iran as the US and its Al Qaeda allies have been trying to stir stuff up in some of the restive provinces such as Khuzestan and Baluchestan.

This is what's wrong with the sickening American media (and Canadian as well).

Despite Ahmadenijad's ridiculous comments, and bad calls by the Iranian government in general, they're a well educated population, and before they were named as the 'axis of evil' they had just gone through a semi-democratic election that elected a number of moderates to their government, and the public movement was away from radicalization and war.

Bush and friends wanted nothing to do with that and have continued to try to back them into a corner..

A moderate and stable Iran is something Bushco definitely fears - as does not-so-moderate and not-so-stable Saudi Arabia; not to mention Israel. Talk about shifting the axis of power and economics in the region.

Would that shift cause the U.S. to leave the region?

No. Only the extraction of the final milliliter of crude out of the sand could do that.
