I have come across several reports regarding the Red Cross lately that have left me feeling some doubt about donating to them. One report said that the director of the Red Cross had donated $25,000.00 to the Bush campaign. I was also very disturbed to see that the Red Cross did not go into New Orleans that first week; it appeared to me that they were complicit in the deaths that resulted. Then, I received a phone call from the Red Cross to thank me for my donation after the Tsunami and to ask if I had received my tax receipt. The woman on the phone said she was calling from Vancouver and she was very chatty and I figured she was looking for another donation, this time for Katrina obviously. I asked her if she was aware that the Red Cross didn’t go into New Orleans that first week and she said “oh no, they were there, and I said no. I didn’t wait for the pitch, I think if she had asked me for another donation I would have lost it, I simply told her that the fact that they had not gone into New Orleans had damaged my confidence in their ability to help. But now I’m wondering, is the Red Cross calling you?Barbara has some comments: “At my little 80 year old ladies home, I find out they haven't seen the RED CROSS for 2 days and they were out of food and water and needed medical attention and meds. I got them all of that. While there, their young neighbor talked with the photo journalists who requested I talk to him and I find out that the RED CROSS REFUSED to talk to him, much less help him. This is a 36 year old man who has a wife with POLIO and they are living in a church with NOTHING. FEMA won't talk to them, they have no phone, etc.”Here: [ 22 September 2005: Message edited by: a citizen of winnipeg ]
