Have to vent about the latest outrage from the Shrub. Dredging up Vietnam to justify staying the course in Iraq. Arghhhh.

Pulling a few quotes from the BBC story:

quote:
"Many argued that if we pulled out, there would be no consequences for the Vietnamese people"

No, we argued the consequences for the Vietnamese people would have been worse if the US stayed. Just like in Iraq.
quote:
"Whatever your position in that debate, one unmistakable legacy of Vietnam is that the price of America's withdrawal was paid by millions of innocent citizens," Mr Bush said, mentioning reprisals against US allies in Vietnam, the displacement of Vietnamese refugees and the massacres in Cambodia under Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge.

Conveniently overlooking the four million Vietnamese civilians killed DURING the war. And Vietnam put a stop to the Cambodian killing fields and overthrew Pol Pot, not the USA. Way to drag in a red herring.

quote:
He warned that in Iraq there was the added danger that a US withdrawal would signal victory for al-Qaeda, emboldening its leaders and drawing in new recruits.

Added danger? At least the Red Menace seemed to some people during the Cold War as a credible strategic threat, unlike al-Qaeda. Want to draw new recruits to al-Qaeda? Then "stay the course" in Iraq.

Of course Bush had a strategy for getting out of Vietnam.

As far as I know, Vietnam is doing reasonably well now.

Perhaps Iraq might be doing that well in thirty years... though I fear they will face greater challenges.

It is not just Bush yapping about Vietnam compares.
quote:
The gradual British drawdown – U.K. troops in Basra will soon be reduced to 5,000, from 7,000 at the start of the year – comes amid angry whispering from Washington insiders that London is setting itself up for a "Saigon moment" replete with "ugly and embarrassing" images of British defeat.
