Lloyd isn't that bad if you don't mind the small town life. And Medicine Hat isn't the worst place in the world I guess. Ft Mac is.

Medicine Hat is a nice town. I was there last week on business. I hope it keeps nice. Growing! Wow.

I had a few hours of time so I hiked along the South Saskatchewan and did some fishing. What a difference a week makes in the weather. This week I'd have to take my skates.

Finding a job is stressful...there is no need to poke fun at this person.

i'm a career consultant and i would probably start my job search by going to an employment centre and getting my resume updated. I'd also take the opportunity to speak with a counsellor or consultant about areas i might need help with (interview skills, where to look for jobs, etc). They also have resources you can use for free, like fax machines, computers, and such.

Then i'd go with the internet - www.jobbank.gc.ca, or www.charityvillage.com

- also you can check provincial/federal government websites.

finally, go through the phone book and make some calls - see who might be hiring.

edited to add: I just noticed your in Toronto - if you want to know about employment agencies in your area just ask.

Well maybe he should leave more details. Like where he wants to work, and in what field. I can guarantee being able to find someone a job in Edmonton on a moment's notice. But if you want in a specific field and/or a high wage/salary, well, that's different than "a job".

That's why I recommended an employment agency. People who say they just "need a job" usually need help figuring out how they are going to target their job search before they begin.

Most of my clients introduce themselves that way!

A lot of people will just say "a job" because they have little self confidence (which happens when you are unemployed for a long time) or sometimes they just have difficulty identifying what their particular skills and capabilities are. Others say that because they are financially strapped and are willing to do pretty much anything at this point. Certainly not something to make fun of. People are very vulnerable when they are unemployed and the last thing they need is someone saying "just look for a help wanted sign dummy!" - job searching is hard work.

See Heywoods sign?

That's just about everywhere in Calgary. Don't walk the streets at night or you might get bonked on the head by a Press Gang and dragged off to work.

There's so much construction work that there's actually guys who drive their pick-up trucks to McDonalds, etc. and offer the workers a job while ordering their egg Mcmuffin.

all well and good for Calgary but the poster (as well as my clients!) all live in Toronto which remains a fairly competitive labour market.

There is a retail store down the street that I stopped in the other day. They had a help wanted sign in the window and I heard they were opening a new location so I thought I'd go in and tell the manager about some of my clients, hand in resumes for them, etc.

She told me they have recieved an average of 50-60 resumes a day!!! That is downtown in a high traffic area though. The point is, even with the advertised job market (perhaps moreso!), you are looking at stiff competition here.

boo.

Edited to add: Mycroft, I don't know what sort of work you're looking for or if you're looking for high growth locations. If you're asking about locations, I'd suggest Grande Prairie (for labour, oil patch and related) and Edmonton (for virtually everything). I have a list of websites that I check daily. I'm (hopefully, fingers crossed) finishing my job search very soon, but I've found hundreds of jobs to apply for (in Edmonton). PM if you want to know any specifics.

Exactly. Unless Mycroft wants to go to Alberta, there's no need to consider moving to Klein country just to find work. The GTA is a huge area that has tons of employment.
