China shoots down satellite in 865 km high orbit.

quote:
"The United States will preserve its rights, capabilities, and freedom of action in space... and deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to US national interests," it says.

Neo-cons must be in paradize about that.

Be careful what you wish for in terms of China surpassing the USA. Robert Mugabe thought it might be a nice idea, and he screwed up his country even worse.

As for this weapons test, whatever. Maybe they'll start clearing up space junk.

As anyone can gather from the posts I've made on US imperialism, I hope the US degenerates into third world conditions, and the sooner the better. Anything that prevents the US from ever starting another war or illegal and clandestine CIA "missions" or overthrowing govts or blocking Cuba will benefit humanity, even if it takes us down with them. I'm sick of the US. They're the main contributor in the world to global warming, and spend as much on their military and weaponry as the rest of the world combined. They alone have the resources to eliminate poverty and disease throughout much of the world. I want to US to suffer mightily, even if they bring us down with them. We're not innocent, either.

From the article:
quote:
The United States, Australia and Canada have criticised China over a weapons test it is said to have carried out in space last week.

The Americans say the Chinese sent up a ballistic missile to destroy an ageing weather satellite.

They say the test went against the spirit of co-operation both countries aspire to in the area of civil space.

It is absolutely breathtaking. The neo-cons make a point of militarizing space and claiming it as the exclusive military domain of the US, essentially launching an arms race, and then they have the audacity to complain about the Chinese and "spirit of co-operation"? Yeah. Whatever.

Fuck that shit. I hope the US degenerates into third world conditions, and the sooner the better

Much of it already has.

No, I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Chinese would be a better "super power" or "hyperpower" than the Americans. They are material driven and will hurtle us down the path to planetary destruction just as fast as the Ameiricans. The difference is that they will be honest they are doing it for pure greed rather than trying to pretend they are on a mission from God to render us all dead.

I guess we'll find out how things are going around 2050. Unless of course we end up with a tripolar world: India, China and USA. That's what the economic maths look like to me, though I've never seen that prediction in print so I guess I'm wrong.

I have read India, China and Europe. Many are predicting the US to become a giant basket case.

Um, and this is better how? For all its faults, the US still has a democratic structure set up to correct gross malfeasance in its leadership. It isn't working at the moment, but the potential is there. China is a dictatorship, plain and simple. Given the choice between the two, I would prefer that the US be the dominant superpower rather than China. Fortunately, we have many other options open to us besides choosing between two imperial overlords.

I hope its a quadrapolar world with India, China, the USA and Europe. The more power is divided the better. I hope India and China democratize and that Japan acheives some much needed social reforms as it is already a regional power. Ah, daydream over...back to work!

In my dreams I see a new southern Axis with Venezuela, Boliva and Cuba at it's centre and a northern Axis with Scandinavia at it's centre working together for a better world.

It's nice to dream once in a while ...

Mugabe isn't screwing up as much as oppressive IMF policies for collecting third world debt. Some African countries have paid back principle on IMG debt three times over if it wasn't for mafia-style interest rates. Oh yeah, and there is an AIDS epidemic still ravaging parts of Africa.

And China is well on its way to surpassing everybody. They now have a middle class as large as the U.S. population. The U.S. reports some 35 million American citizens experiencing food insecurity at least once a month. The number of Americans living in poverty is rising. And our fearless leaders want us to integrate with that economy ?. By gum!
