CUPE Local 543, representing about 1,100 City of Windsor inside workers, is undergoing an in-depth financial audit, including a review of the use of credit cards by executives, after irregularities were discovered last year, according to Pierina DeBellis, CUPE national representative for the Windsor area office.According to information obtained by The Star, an accounting firm that audited the local's books found unaccounted for and unexplained credit card disbursements.
DeBellis said the union will look at putting into place a process that requires credit card statements and cheque disbursements to be authorized by more than one person "to make sure we're using union dollars in a healthy way."
DeBellis said union members who showed up at Wednesday's elections for the executive board of Local 543 were "upset" and didn't like that the information was being disclosed covertly. Many had received the leaked information and wanted official answers from the union.
DeBellis said the report and the recommendations on credit card use will be released in September.
