anyone that is in to alternative energy or poor country devellopment, please concider collecting the corrugated plastic for later. Also, do you know any students looking for a project?
I would like someone to compare parabolic and compound parabolic dishes.
See which is better?
Corrugated plastic can be cut into "petals" that are joined together to make solar cookers.
Everyone thinks parabolic is best. It would be fairly simple to make either type from slightly different petal templates and then cut from the waste election signs and tape them together.
A small solar cooker made this way pays for itself in about 50 meals.
A solar panel, on the other hand pays for itself (in energy production) in about 70 years!
The compound parabolic solar cooker is a relatively new idea that can quickly reach other parts of the world only if people try it out. The signs are garbage anyway, so why not use them for good?

In many cases, I think campaigns recycle the signs by using them in the next election since it is often the same person running again.

I'm liking what I'm seeing nowadays, with many candidates simply creating signs that have their name and party colours on it, without election-specific slogans, or the election date or whatever, especially if they run in more than one election, or provincially and federally. I notice that a lot of NDP candidates do this, probably so that they can recycle the election signs. I consider this to be very environmentally responsible.

I think it would be a great idea for someone to create signs that would make it easy for people to replace the name on the sign with new names. So that the riding association can recycle the signs and put a new name on it if someone else wins the nomination for the new election. It would save money, and the environment.

They have other uses too (when you know the candidate is not running again). I used a couple as a barrier to prevent a decorative plant that spreads via rhizomes from taking over a corner of my garden. Just dig down about 3 feet... they make a great root barrier. (and it helps to let the candidate know what you are doing, don't want to hurt their feelings LOL)

and at the rate we're going, they get a chance to re-use the sign every two years!

so it makes economic sense too

Definitely the way to go. 'Re-use' comes before 'recycle' in the 3R's. And re-using something as it is, or nearly as it is, comes before re-using it in a form different from the original purpose.

Good idea Brian! Solar cookers - any links to websites with designs?

Suggestion: maybe just save them for a few months until the next federal election? [this government won't last long].

One of our supporters told me they had used a Conservative sign to clean up after their dog.

Many of Maria Minna's large signs had "TEAM MARTIN" covered over, but poorly enough so that you could still read it.

ETA: Another use of those signs, more frivolous than solar cookers, is to slide down hills in winter. Apparently they zip down quite fast...
