I think the technology of the automobile, next to the televison has probably had the greatest effect on everything to do with how we shape our societies and how we live our lives.

If car ownership in China, India, and other rapidly devolping countries reach the same level as North America will this be sustainable.

Indian Car Culture

quote:
Indians are rushing headlong to get behind the wheel, as incomes rise, car loans proliferate and the auto industry churns out low-cost cars to nudge them off their motorcycles. They bought 1.5 million cars last year, and by some estimates India is expected to pass China this year as the fastest-growing car market. That car mania was on display at the Auto Expo in New Delhi this week, as Maruti Suzuki unveiled a concept car.

No, not sustainable whatsoever. To halt climate change major life changes needed in ALL COUNTRIES. Here in western world, we have to move beyond the individual car centred life. In other countries not yet with this problem they should not begin. I understand they have poorness and other issues that may be alleviated some by mass cars but replacing one problem (poorness) with another (mass environmental damage) is not a solution.

On another thread I gave one, maybe two, links that predict the Alberta oilsands projects will be the single largest polluter in Canada - and much of the product will likely flow south to feed an ever-growing and insatiable appetite for oil and gas. A huge amount of water pollution as well - did anyone see the CBC special two weeks ago that showed huge lakes being created where nothing can live? And this is all to feed the automobile culture.

I agree, it seems impossible for the earth to support a billion new car drivers for long - but if you read the links I gave - especially in booming India and China the urge to own, drive a car seems unstoppable and is expanding rapidly as cars get cheaper to make.

Owning a car is about much more than getting where you need to go.

And if one looks at the recent economic data from Eastern C plus the amount of whining from McGuilty and Charest at the PM's meet 'n greet, the West's energy economy is the only entity that can sustain Canada's "equalisation"

Maybe D Williams will kick a few bucks into the plan for Ont and PQ but his angry squacking will release more CO2 emission into the atmosphere than the same funding from the oilsands.

So, who's going to tell the Asians that our western standard of living is ruining the planet and that they shoild suck it up and forego any improvement in theirs?

Presumably China and India will grow their own environmental movements, if they haven't already.
