Watch the video of Stephen Colbert's speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday.

The Prez was there squirming throughout and the hack media just sat there feeling uncomfortable as Colbert handed them their ass on a plate.

"Colbert complained that he was “surrounded by the liberal media who are destroying this country, except for Fox News. Fox believes in presenting both sides of the story — the president’s side and the vice president’s side." In another slap at the news channel, he said: "I give people the truth, unfiltered by rational argument. I call it the No Fact Zone. Fox News, I own the copyright on that term."

I cant' download the video till I get to work tomorrow (awful sloooooow dialup) but I found the transcript and I gotta say that Stephen went beyond brilliant on this one.

Wow. That was stunning. I don't much like Colbert's style or his tv show -- I sometimes think you need to see Bill O'Reilly to understand what Colbert is doing.

But this -- this was utterly amazing. Turning to look Bush in the eye and then thoroughly skewering him. Same for Laura Bush. No love for the press corp either.

But this quick bit -- now that took courage:

quote:
See who we've got here tonight. General Mowsly, Air Force Chief of Staff. General Peter Pace. They still support Rumsfeld. You guys aren't retired yet, right? Right, they still support Rumsfeld. Look, by the way, I've got a theory about how to handle these retired generals causing all this trouble, don't let them retire. C'mon, we've got a stop loss program, let's use it on these guys. If you're strong enough to go on one of those pundit shows, you can stand on a bank of computers and order men into battle.

The generals were in the audience. Why one might ask, but there they were.

Oh and the truly "funny" bit was the video with Helen Thomas determinidly asking Colbert (as Bush's Press Secretary); "Why did we invade Iraq?" You've got to love Thomas!

I don't remember his direct quote dismissing the Titanic metaphor being applied to the Bush Presidency but it was something along the lines of "it's not like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, if anything its like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg." That was pretty cool.

The thing I like about Colbert is that so many people -- including many of his guests -- don't get that he's a parody of a right-wing talk show host. He makes people look ridiculous by pretending to agree with their lunacy, which pushes them to go farther than they might otherwise go on national TV.

Go here
or here
There are lots versions up...the 300 meg one is the FULL telecast...(I don't recommend as it's boring and lame)
The other ones listed at smaller sizes are only Bush and Colbert or just either alone...

All in .avi format which means you can view it on Media Player...if you burn just the Colbert segment, you can easily fit Colbert's Kristol interview and a few other gems from his show and make it a 'Best of' Colbert disc for home play.

I personally enjoyed his talk about Bush's approval rating.

"32% isn't a glass is half empty situation at all! It's a glass is 2/3rds empty situation."

It may be the first time anyone has spoken the truth in Bush's presence since about 2001. I hope he had nightmares about it.

Colbert was very courageous. I hope Bush regrets all the nonsense about the French.

Colbert is brilliant. I don't know how he does it night after night. Some of his comments and questions are just so outrageous (that's outrageous in a good sense!). I'm always amazed how he can turn a topic inside out and take it somewhere you'd never expect it to go. It'll be interesting to follow his career.

Colbert and Thomas' work at the White House Correspondents' Dinner was hilarious -- and courageous. If you appreciate it, and if you like, you can thank:

Helen Thomas: [email protected]
Stephen Colbert: Thank you

The latter site has a video link to the event.

Is that Colbert, as in bear,(French) or Colbert as in Bert?

Edited to say: Sorry, wrong thread.

The Colbert Report (and Daily Show) writers deserve a lot of the credit for that too. The right-wing blogosphere must be going out of their minds.

Cobert said he had to run 250 miles home in wing tips after that speech. The frustrating thing about his show is, he gets fascinating guests and often doesn’t allow them to say anything meaningful. Living where I do, he and I are very close on the bear issue.

Later, eh!

Yes his last name is pronounced correctly. That is in French.

As I point out in my next rabble radio podcast, it takes a clown to point out the Emperor has no clothes.

Colbert rules!

Did You Hear the One About the Satirist and the President? Probably Not
by Heather Mallick

Excerpt:

quote:
History was made last week at the White House Press Correspondents' Dinner. But it took a non-journalist – a comedian in fact – to do the job the well-fed journalists failed to do: take on George W. Bush.

The thing is, you likely won't have heard about it. The mainstream media ignored the keynote speech by Stephen Colbert, which made Bush look like a smashed toadstool and the American press look like the compost a mushroom grows in.

My favourite 'over the top right wing moment' of Colbert's is when he asked some biggoted congressman from Georgia;

"So, you're against gay marriage and gay adoption... where do you stand on gay driver's liscences? I'm against them. I don't want them out there gaying up our highways".
