quote: CHINA signalled yesterday that its first ballistic missile strike on a satellite was aimed at bringing the US to the negotiating table for a treaty to prevent a space arms race. Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd has joined Foreign Minister Alexander Downer in criticising the January 11 test that took out one of China's ageing weather satellites, theoretically giving Beijing the capability to shoot down spy satellites.
To be fair: the US started this 'new' arms race by blowing the dust off the foolish missile defence program. This is China's response. Oh the insanity.

What ruffled the US' feathers is the precision of the missile.
While this is yet an unfortunate step, may it contribute towards putting some sanity into the US' insane ambitions.

I think you're right. Sidra. Anything that causes US war planners to think twice about their invulnerability is probably a good thing. I've often wondered whether the US would be able to function, militarily, or at least function effectively, if it suddenly lost all its gps satellites. It looks like a fairly impressive trick China has accomplished here. And if they can take out one satellite, presumably they can take out others.
