The solution, if only partial:

Catch 'em. Eat 'em. Make the rats a menu item.

Plague

quote:
"The rats are much bigger than usual. They eat everything that is fresh and green," he said.

The rodents have multiplied at an alarming rate - the bamboo blossom is such a good food source for them that when they eat it they can breed up to eight times a year - four times more often than normal.

And ingest all that poison/Warfarin?
quote:
Bliter, from another thread: Gardening one day, a large rat determinedly, it seemed, slowly crossed my garden and stopped at my feet. If I'd wished, I'm sure I could have picked it up, but did not.
I could see no injury other than profuse bleeding from the mouth and other cavities. I strongly suspected that the animal was close to death after having ingested Warfarin or a similar rodent bait.

From a Chinese Zodiac website:
quote:
...do not take chances or unnecessary risks: the year of the Rat is still ruled by the cold of winter and the darkness of night. Those who speculate indiscriminately and overextend themselves will come to a sad reckoning.
I also wonder how most Bangladeshis feel about eating rat meat: it may be totally contrary to their beliefs - 80% of them are Muslim.

In matters of survival, beliefs and qualms may go by the board. In James Clavell's King Rat a novel of life in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, rats were valued as currency and food. (also a movie of same name)

I attribute greater intelligence to those involved. If the rat poison was that plentiful, I doubt the problem would have arisen.

Recipe time!

quote:
Brown rats and roof rats were eaten openly on a large scale in Paris when the city was under siege during the Franco-Prussian War. Observers likened their taste to both partridges and pork. And, according to the Larousse Gastronomique, rats are still eaten in some parts of France. In fact, this recipe appears in that famous tome.

Grilled Rats Bordeaux Style (Entrecote à la bordelaise)
Alcoholic rats inhabiting wine cellars are skinned and eviscerated, brushed with a thick sauce of olive oil and crushed shallots, and grilled over a fire of broken wine barrels.

I've been wondering what to do with all those broken wine barrels...

Recipes? A great idea - and for a refreshing change, not posted for purposes of derailing.

If shy of that first taste, curry fixes everything.

quote:
Chinese Rat Control: A Recipe for Success

Marinated rat steaks and rat-skin shoes are popular in some areas of rural China and are a good way to help control the pests that are said to consume 15 million tons of grain a year, a newspaper said today.

The official English-language newspaper China Daily said live rats were being sold in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China for about 50 cents a pound, almost as much as chicken.

''In Fujian Province, local people hail rat steak as the best steak in the world,'' it said, quoting a report in the Chinese-language newspaper Economic Information.

I feel foolish. I thought the thread was about Republican presidential candidates in the southern US!

clersal,

Your link duplicated Sineed's but all was not lost since I went further into the link and, after hitting on "appetizers" some rat steaks are starting to look pretty good. More at the link - Main Dishes etc.

quote:
Appetizers

Jellied Moose Nose
Stuffed Nasturtium Blossoms
James' World's Hottest Wings
Boogers on a Stick
Cow Udder Éclairs
Fried Bugs
Slug Fritters
Frog Croquettes
Coyote Droppings
Crudites With Vomit Vinaigrette
Rootworm Beetle Dip
Pumpernickel Pus Lumps
Pickled Pigs' Ears
Lizard Tongues On Crackers
Fried Giant Silkworm Pupae (also more pictures)
Pate Twinkie a l'Orange avec frisée et fourchette

Munroe,

You've survived the plane crash on the mountain top but are without food. The Republican candidate, alas, did not make it but may still serve.

Republican-on-a-stick coming up!

Republican on a stick, eh? I shouldn't trade in tasteless banter when famine is a real world concern, but is that "the other white meat"? Tenderised with a little holy water, I assume?

ElizaQ,

That was truly scary. One wonders where the woman slept or even if she slept.

It was good that the solution worked. I just hope there wasn't too much collateral damage - hawks, dingoes, etc.
