quote: Defence officials have secretly requested a "prodigious quantity" of ammunition from Russia to supply the Afghan army in case a Democrat president takes over in Washington and pulls out US troops.
USA arranging Russian arms ...to Afghanistan! Noteworthy is the Iranian connection here... quote: Diplomatic sources also believe that the US may be offering the estimated $400 million (£215 million) deal, including transport costs, to the Russians as an inducement to embargo its arms and nuclear technology exports to Iran.
What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive.

The Daily Telegraph can disclose ... Diplomatic sources also believe ... Defence specialists said ... ...said an arms source connected to Russia A senior British officer said...What a tangled web we weave when we manufacture sensationalist BS in order to sell newspapers. The whole article is devoid of any reputable source. There may be truth to this spurious claim but the way it is written gives one pause to consider that the Telegraph found this in the News of the World, beside the story of the three-legged man who claims to have been impregnated by aliens.

Afghan envoy says Taliban strength growing - May 12 quote: But Jawad told Associated Press Friday that Afghan troops were stretched thin and up against better weapons in the hands of the Taliban. In some instances, he said, 10 to 15 Afghan soldiers are deployed to defend districts hundreds of miles wide. The soldiers are poorly trained, not properly equipped, some have not been paid for months and some have only two clips of ammunition, he said. "They are brave, but they are very vulnerable," Jawad said.
I suppose having only two clips of ammo isn't under-equipped as long as they have rifles. They can always yell "bang!" I would give the fledgling Afghani army two and half years tops, if and when the American's and NATO pull the pin on Afghanistan. Then the drug barons and warring factions can do it all over again.

Found mention of the article in a blurb in the Vancouver Sun with the Telegraph credited. No legitimate sources again. The ANArmy is trained and supplied by the coalition military who also oversee that pay is provided. The ANPolice on the other hand are not. They are civil and from what I undestand, the military is not allowed to train, equip or otherwise interfere with them. ANPolice funds are embezzelled by the Karzai government, the police do not get trained, equipped or paid and therefore resort to crime and extortion to survive. The ANArmy is totally involved with counter-insurgency,leaving the corrupt, undermanned and equipped ANPolice to protect the populace. I do not doubt the legitimacy of the claim in the Telegraph.Perhaps more info is forthcoming.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Fidel: [QB]Afghan envoy says Taliban strength growing - May 12 The AP article reinforces other opinions that it is the Karzai government that is the obstacle to developing an efficient police. As Karzai's government has among it the very warlords and dope dealers that profit from a weak ineffective police force,it is Karzai who needs to address the lack of funding for the police.
