Blackwater Licence Being Revoked in Iraq

quote:
BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government said Monday that it was revoking the license of an American security firm accused of involvement in the deaths of eight civilians in a firefight that followed a car bomb explosion near a State Department motorcade.

The Interior Ministry said it would prosecute any foreign contractors found to have used excessive force in the Sunday shooting. It was the latest accusation against the U.S.-contracted firms that operate with little or no supervision and are widely disliked by Iraqis who resent their speeding motorcades and forceful behavior.

The article estmates there are about 1000 of these security people (mercs) currently operating in the country.

quote:
The question of whether they could face prosecution is legally murky. Unlike soldiers, the contractors are not bound by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Under a special provision secured by American-occupying forces, they are exempt from prosecution by Iraqis for crimes committed there.

Khalaf, however, denied that the exemption applied to private security companies.

Well, they said they were preparing the way for Iraqis to take over the running of Iraq. I guess they're ready.

I find it mildly amusing that the Iraqi government (such as it is) draws some sort of imaginary line between Blackwater mercenaries and the US armed forces. Do they really think there's a difference between the two, aside from pay-scale and profiteering?

Al Maliki has stated that Iraq can easily find other friends than the US. I don't believe that Iraq or Iraqis draw a distinction between the two as much as they are practical enough to make the distinction between how they can presently respond and how they can't yet respond.

Blackwater has created an aura of arrogant indiscriminant agression for themselves and may be the most easily challenged for the Iraqi government. They may be the most easily challenged but no doubt, they will not be easily challenged. Blackwater is owned by billionaire fundamentalists with strong ties to the US heirarchy.

Hmmm...There seems to be some dispute over this US claim by the Iraqis.

Perhaps a more accurate statement is: Under a special provision DICTATED to an Iraqi government not yet capable of resisting by American-occupying forces.

Something that won't be heard in in the Washington corridors of power anytime soon: "Well, the elected government of Iraq doesn't want our contract killers there anymore. We must respect this and pull them out immediately."

Or in New Orleans for that matter.
