Does anyone know some good Social Democratic analysis on why Ireland is no longer the sick man of Europe?

One word: subsidies.

From "The Right Stuff":

You know what really makes your rocket ships go up?

Funding. That's what makes your ships go up.

I'll tell you something, and you guys, too.
No bucks, no buck rogers.

Whoever gets the funding gets the technology.
Whoever gets the technology stays on top.

Privateer, I agree with Krago. I had some good research about this -- I'll see if I can find it. But after Ireland joined the EU it became eligible for billions of dollars in what we might call "transfer payments." They seem to have put it to good use and invested it wisely in the right kind of enterprises and have built a so-far strong mixed economy.

There were the usual calls for tax cuts and privatization and de-regulation but I think they kept that to a minimum.

To hear the rightoids tell it you'd think corporate tax cuts were the Wunderkind that drove the entire "miracle". Failing, of course, to mention a highly localized banking system which kept its eye on the community it served and not on worldwide derivatives trading.

It looks like huge investments in education and training, again thanks to EU money, help too.

I think a better question would be, how in hell does a country that exports the 2nd largest amount of crude oil to the States every year perform with such mediocrity ?. Can't we buy a few doctors with the shitload of natural gas and lumber carted off to the States every day ?. The last time Ireland watched idly by as exports of all kinds were shipped off to "the market", six million of them starved to death in 1847. Does Ireland have a comparable Leduc oil field or old growth trees being shipped back to them as finished products and toilet paper ?.

I don't think the Irish are overly clever, it's just that Canadian's are incredibly docile when it comes to politics and the economy.

Well first we need to be strong enough to develop and implement made-in-Canada policies that reflect the best interests of the Canadian people.

The only thing Americans and the Chinese understand is strength, and since we do not want to be imperialist, we ought to have more defensive strength. More defensive strength makes it easier for we as Canadians -- and not those loyal to Washington, Beijing, or or some other reactionary hellhole -- to control our own affairs.

More sovereignty means more civil liberties (because our culture is far less authoritarian than America's, China's, or anybody else interested in imposing their values on Canada or in controlling our economy) and the ability to develop economic and foreign policies that work for Canadians.

Keeping our millitary in shambles as the Liberals would like to do is not conducive to a sovereign and free Canada, but just so we're clear, strenghtening our millitary while whoring it out to American interests -- as the Conservatives propose -- would be even more devastating.

What will work is a well-organised millitary whose main strengths are its defensive and its transportation capabilities.

It seems funny that no one has mentionned the commitment to education that the Irish Republic has made for quite a few decades, now.

I would say that this, a well-educated population, above all other factors, placed the Irish in a good position to benefit from the new economy.

Edited: Privateer mentionned investing in education, but that preceded the EU by decades.
