Protest pits Corrections unions against each other. 'Invasion' of workplace: Prison guards released crickets into offices to speed up contract talks

A rowdy series of protests that included dumping live crickets into a government building has landed federal prison guards in hot water with members of another Corrections union, who say they were traumatized and even assaulted by the officers.

I find this pretty ammusing. Of course, I think that prison gaurds and other screws should be kicked out of real unions. Defenders of capital have no place in the workers' movement.

You know, you might want to think about the broader implications of the fact that these people tend to be regarded as the ugly ducklings of the correctional system.

They get shat on by the government, which figures there won't be any big public outcry over any bonehead idea to "fix" the prison system, or cuts in salaries and wages, and they get shat on by the general public which figures the prison system is just one big fat Club Med.

These people are the day-to-day rule enforcers in the jails we have, and they can either be capricious and arbitrary, or fair and even-handed. When they are the former - as seems to be often the case, prisoners don't get properly resocialized. Instead they figure that the way to get around and the way to win is to just be as inhuman as possible.

Oh, and by the way - people who get shat on a lot tend to not be too keen on being smiles and pattycake to people they have authority over.

A worker is a worker. I realize that this gets problematic when those workers are employed as the coercive arm of the state. But I don't think it's fair to blame the worker for failing to embrace a revolutionary ideology when very few workers in any industry have achieved such a level of consciousness. It's particularly unfair when, as DrConway points out, your talking to a group of uniformed workers who are relatively low on the totem poll and "shat upon" by pretty much everyone above them.

Education, communication and outreach will get you further than heaping scorn on those not as "enlightened" as you.

Here in the Boston area, BTW, the predominantly Irish working class cops are quite close to the rest of the labour movement. For a long time, if they found out you were union, too, they'd even fix your tickets for you. If and when the revolution comes, I wouldn't mind having a few allies who have guns.
