I do not understand why unions, workers and employers are in conflict over this issue. Is it not important for employers to help their employees balance their work and family lives? I find it hard to book time off without having my employer giving me a hard time. As well, my union gives me little support. Does anyone else have similar difficulties?

There are a lot of variables there. The situation can change from business to business or at different locations in the same business. If you are the only employee within 500 kilometers, than flextime is impossible. The larger the workplace, the easier it should be. In a really big place, it boils down to whether management is nice.

If it were only that simple. The problem IMO stems from the fact that most retail workers want the same days off, which would be on the weekends. Add to the equation that weekends are the retailors busiest part of the week.
In my experience as a retail worker I had no problems getting a day off during the week. In fact my manager loved it when employees chose to work weekends. Weekends was another story.
