Tentative Agreement for 800 Department Store Workers (Globe & Mail)

quote:
Toronto — The Canadian Auto Workers union and Hudson's Bay Co. have reached a new contract covering 800 Ontario workers at the big department store retailer.

The union said Saturday the deal covers workers in Windsor, Kitchener, Brampton, Kingston and Toronto.

The three-year contract improves wages and contract language, but the union did not provide specifics.

Hemi Mitic, assistant to the CAW president, said the union's bargaining committee unanimously endorsed the deal, which will be put to a ratification vote by CAW members next week.

“It will be good to have this contract in place as we face a challenging and competitive retail environment," added Bill Gibson, CAW national staff representative.

Well, this is encouraging. Two and a half years ago these workers fought a bitter strike to win a contract that preserved their right to a basic wage scale rather than so-called "merit pay," so I am glad to hear that the union was apparently successful in bargaining a fair contract without a strike this time around.
