hey boss look out your
window see that balloon over there
question mark
now doesn t that look like
a better way to get around i know i have
wings and all
but a roach gets tired and
even my way of flying is noisy

ever been up in one of
those things
question mark
so quiet i imagine nothing
to hear but the wind
no news no talk of wars
an adventure too if you don t have
wings yourself because you
don t know where you ll end up
and have to walk back
more people should have that
experience i think
what do you think mehitabel
question mark
i m sure you remember going up
with the montgolfier brothers
back in the day
as they say nowadays
though they never seem quite sure
which day

but archy it was not
so quiet at all
up there
i didn t mind the duck
or the sheep so much
but that damned cockerel
crowing the whole way about
how he could fly
on his own if
he really wanted to
i tell you archy i was tempted

but i am as you know
always a lady
and besides etienne
had such beautiful eyes
pools of chocolate
if we hadn t been so crowded
but we were

actually archy they brought us back
in a coach that day
for an audience
with louis and
marie the clueless
i knew them already of course
and it wasn t her fault
but you couldn t tell her
anything
oh no not her the splendid sweet
airhead
ah well i did my best

the duck was plump and
modest and
tempting too
but it was science archy
so i gave it my all
je ne regrette rien
although some thanks would be nice

mehitabel i always love
to hear your stories having
only had the one
former life myself
and as a vers libre
poet it wasn t nearly
so glamourous

i ve met cockerels like that
loud braggarts all right
well the cheaper the bird
the gaudier the patter
as your friend bogie
once said
glamour be damned
give me flight any day

but i also remember another
story mehitabel
about balloons at the siege of paris
weren t you there too
question mark

and as for giving your all
to science admirable all right
but at least unlike
that poor russian dog
it wasn t a one way trip

i went with leon
you know archy
because we were needed in tours
he was so pale when we
took off
but i sang wotthehell wotthehell
to keep his spirits up
and besides the sailors
brought champagne

a few of those balls
the prussians fired at us
came mighty close
but we spritzed them back
and shouted down
toujours gai and
va t en foutre and
other patriotic sayings
even leon became
very gai after
a while
wink

you know archy you are
right about balloons
the prussians couldn t seem
to get the hang
of them
not flying them nor
shooting them down
neither
they were not gai
i guess
not gai enough
anyway

we were very gai
and we won the battle
of the balloons
although we lost that war
eventually
but wotthehell wotthehell
i was in monaco
by then
it was winter
after all

you might be right about
the prussians mehitabel
at least back then
but what about the zeppelins
question mark
not very gai maybe
but sleek and stylish
an elegant way to travel
by air
come to think of it
weren t you on those too
question mark
in fact if i remember right
you were even on the hindenburg
it s a lucky thing you ve had
more than the usual nine lives

anyway I like balloons
we need more balloons
you can t drop bombs from them
well ok it happened but planes
have passed them by in that respect
there s no such thing as a
fighter balloon
you can t crash them into
buildings well ok it happened
but it just bounced off and
no one was hurt and
everybody laughed

have any of you folks
been up in a balloon
question mark
