What actions are planned in your area, whether demonstrations, cultural events or other events? In Montréal, the demo is TODAY, at 12:30 p.m. - well, it won't really get under way until 1 pm. Needless to say the main focus will be on the more anti-woman aspects of the Charest government's labour and social policies: fighting sub-contracts and precarious work, for pay equity and especially to defend the CPEs (Centres de la petite enfance) the so-called "$5 a day daycares" - Charest raised the fee to $7 a day and they are still woefully underfunded. Looks like a nice day here, though not as warm as earlier in the week.

Date : Dimanche 7 mars 2004
Lieu : Montréal
Rassemblement : 12h30 au Carré Dominion
(coin Peel et René-Lévesque - métro Peel)
Trajet : Départ de la manifestation à 13h00 en direction du Bureau du Premier ministre Charest

In Paris, the demonstration yesterday was large but divided, the more old-school feminists with the traditional demands about violence, defending abortion and employment rights etc. and a large contingent organised by "Ni Putes ni Soumises", an association of young women in immigrant ghettoes. The latter group is strongly in favour of the legislation banning veils among school pupils, the former opposed to such legislation and seeing it as a divisive issue.

I haven't heard from any other demonstrations elsewhere in the world.

The demonstration today in Montréal was fairly large - several thousand anyway - but very "trade union" in content and appearance. The unions were strongly represented; there were few from popular groups and autonomist women's movements.

Writer was telling me on Friday that something was to be happening in Toronto yesterday - but I wasn't sure right up until noon or 1 yesterday whether I had other plans. Turned out that the tentative plans weren't. And then (I know this is pathetic), I got so involved in packing, cleaning out closets, and other domestic chores that it was evening before I knew it.

Even Dubya marked IWD this year. Bush praises man in speech on women's rights
quote:
"Earlier today, the Libyan government released Fathi Jahmi. She's a local government official who was imprisoned in 2002 for advocating free speech and democracy," the president said in a speech at the White House on Friday. The only problem was that, by all other accounts, "she" is in fact "he".
Also recognized were Paul Wolfowitz, Colin Powell and of course, First Lady Laura Bush.
