(CNN) -- Former Sen. Fred Thompson on Tuesday ended his run for the presidency, coming off the heels of a disappointing third-place finish in South Carolina's GOP primary and heading into the showdown state of Florida next week.

"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States," Thompson said in a statement.

"I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."

Yeah, like this guy was ever gonna fill Reagan's shoes. He couldn't even fill the shoes of DA Adam Schiff on Law & Order.

Wonder if he's gonna endorse McCain and to see where his votes go. I remember watching coverage of the SC primary and many suggested that if he weren't in the race and getting votes from social conservatives, Huckabee would have won.

He was good in The Hunt For Red October. "The Russkies don't take a dump without a plan, son." Is that classic cold war paranoia, or what?

Perhaps he should have had a plan before launching his bid for the Presidency.
