Missionary group denies CIA link

BBC - A US missionary group threatened with expulsion from Venezuela has denied spying for Washington.

President Hugo Chavez said on Wednesday that the New Tribes Mission would have to leave because it had been sharing sensitive information with the CIA.

Wow, I find this really curious.

I've known missionaries with New Tribes Mission in places such as Papua New Guinea, and it's hard for me to imagine more earnest and apolitical people.

I admit that times have changed, and anything is possible.

I think he just wants to get them kicked out. Easiest way is to lie about their affiliation to the US.

Missionary groups are crawling through latin america targeting the poor people. I'll admit evangelicals scare me and I really feel they are profiteers of poverty.

A rare misstep for Hugo, if he linked New Tribes with the CIA. That's like saying the NED is really CIA, when they're just fellow travellers.

Former CIA operative, Phillip Agee on the CIA's "strategies" for protecting US interests in Latin America...

Agee: When I was in the agency from the late 1950s on through to the late 1960s, the agency had operations going internationally, regionally, and nationally, attempting to penetrate and manipulate the institutions of power in countries around the world, and these were things that I did in the CIA—the penetration and manipulation of political parties, trade unions, youth and student movements, intellectual, professional and cultural societies, religious groups and women’s groups and especially of the public information media.
