To quote Debbie Stoller from Bust Magazine, a lot of the message of I Am Sam really "got on my tits." First and foremost, the notion that even a mentally challenged man with the intellectual capacity of a 7 year old is a far better parent than a working mother.

I'm just growing very weary of movies that make mentally ill people seem "cute" and charming.

I'd venture to guess that those folk who rave about these fims as "inspirational, poetic, touching" and other such nonsense have never dealt with a person, friend or family member who is mentally ill.

There's nothing cute, or inspirational about it. It's very difficult and those poor souls aren't getting the care they need at all. They are largely ignored.

Aw, the big, bad, social workers don't think a person with the mental capacity of a seven yearold is capable of raising a person. Those evil bastards.

The other movie I found repulsive? Doctor T and the "Women". Gag me!

Sh*t, and I had hopes in that movie since Altman is one of my favourite directors. I have to see it.

The movie that sounds really horrifying is that Mel Gibson flick, What Women Want.

I didn't even see it.

I found the whole idea of a bunch of beautiful women tittering and fighting over who go to have more pap smears with this hunky OBGYN totally inappropriate and ridiculous.

What was the worst part of it for you?

I found the whole movie offensive. First of all the waiting room is more like a scene from WWF with everyone fighting and talking at the tops of their voices.

I've been in a number of OB-GYN offices and they've all been like elevators don't look at anyone and talk quietly. Also you never see a male there. Well guys go quite often now with their pregnant wives to share in the experience.

His wife has a breakdown and he starts an affair with nary a pang of guilt and this isnt' explored in any way.

Every woman is shown as having some sort of emotional difficulty and the only quiet parts of the movie are when he is with his male friends.

At the end he delivers a male baby and holds it high and rejoices that it is a boy.

Edited to add sorry to have hijacked the thread this movie sounds awful as well. What is it with the war on women in hollywood? It never has been friendly or factual but seems to be getting worse.

You go right ahead, Tres ...

It sounds as though what we really need is a Mel Gibson filter. First he mangles Scottish history. Then he's leading a lie of an American Revolution. I gather he's now spreading whipped topping over Viet Nam. Ob/Gyn must have seemed just another frontier ...
