Earthquake in Iran Kills 80

quote:
A powerful earthquake shook central Iran on Tuesday, killing at least 80 people, injuring more than 300 and disrupting power to the region, state-run television reported.

Provincial governor Mohammad Ali Karimi was quoted by the TV station as saying that "several villages have been destroyed" by the 6.4-magnitude quake in Kerman province.

At least 80 people were killed and more than 300 injured in the earthquake, the broadcast quoted Interior Ministry spokesman Jahanbakhsh Khanjani as saying.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at 5:55 a.m., was 35 miles from Kerman, capital of Kerman province, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Quakes in Iran, mudslides and rains in SoCal, heavy snow in Toronto... It's obvious this is God's work, bringing destruction to the heathens and the sodomites. Remember, our God is bigger than their "god". Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. [/Christian Right]

Surely this must all be caused by Global Warming? Blaming Christianity is soooo '80s.

Who was blaming Christianity?

This is terrible news. I hope my son's relatives are okay. They're more to the northwest though, so hopefully it won't have affected them.

Oh, I just read the article in full now - I only saw "central Iran" at first, but then I noticed Kerman mentioned, and that's pretty far south.

Still - such a sad story.

Those mud-built houses are an issue. I know that redevelopment can't happen overnight, but the rest of the world should make a commitment to those areas -- the loss of life is almost entirely due to those fragile dwellings.

And one earthquake a day ... It bears some meditation.

The Bam earthquake was fourteen months ago. Isn't Iran moving to protect it's citizens? Surely they have the means to get them out of "deathtraps".

I'm not sure what the government can do. Well, you know, besides massively reforming their corrupt and oppressive practices with regards to the poor and women and children. (I just watched a documentary on The Passionate Eye last night about poor women in Iran who have been forced to be prostitutes, and it's sickening.)

The government will be in no position to help the poorest members of its society as long as the entire government runs on corruption. After all, the point of the Iranian Revolution was supposed to be that the revenues from the nationalization of oil would bring social justice to all. But what has actually happened is that the old elite was replaced by a new, religious elite who are just as corrupt, just as nasty, and just as oppressive as the old elite.

And so, the poor live in mud huts. And die in earthquakes.

I watched the same piece, and I agree. That documentary should become required watching for some of these Muslim fundamentalists. Just goes to show you that the US Religious Reich has no corner on hypocrisy.

That was me, being a jackass earlier in this thread.

In all seriousness though, my heart goes out to the Iranian families who lost loved ones.
