African Union calls aristide removal unconstitutional -- Yahoo

quote:
In telephone conversations Friday and Thursday, Patterson told him Aristide was visiting Jamaica "because he had no other place to go," Latortue said. That confirmed some countries' reluctance to be embroiled in the diplomatic fallout from Aristide's charges that Haiti's democratically elected president was abducted by the United States and forced from office.

Haitian voices from the left opposed to Aristedes return
quote:
15 March 2004 - The Haitian organisations that are members of the Assembly of Caribbean People express their concern and indignation at the announced visit of Mr Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Jamaica over the next few weeks.

Haitian organisations are asking their Caribbean partners to exert pressure on their respective governments so that they understand that Mr Aristide's presence constitutes a real threat to the fledgling and fragile democratic process. The organisations of civil society in Haiti's neighbouring countries should work hard to enlighten public opinion, as well as political leaders, as to the character of Jean-Bertrand Aristide's defunct regime...

They go on to condemn the occupation and US meddling and demand Aristedes be put on trial for "crimes against the Haitian people".

Anyone familiar with the Assembly of Caribbean People?

So that's why my keyboard's goes nuts sometimes

Interview with Camille Chambers - Executive Secretary of the Haitian Platform for Alternative Development Policy (PAPDA) and the representative of Jubilee South in Haiti

quote:
Today's events are taking place in a very confusing political context because the U.S. was also very opposed to the Aristide government, at first because of Aristide's anti-imperialist discourse and a very strong base, especially in poor neighborhoods. But while Aristide was abandoning this political line and moving closer to a certain U.S. figure, also in Haiti there was a great change as many of the popular provinces that had supported Aristide turned over to the opposition.
