Aiee, our favourite statesman is at it again, along with his fascist friends. Italian PM Berlusconi is seeking veteran status for participants in the so-called "Italian Social Republic", the Nazi puppet regime set up in 1943 after Italy capitulated to the allies in 1943. The Republic of Salo's thugs carried out ferocious reprisals against partisans and terrorised the population.

Berlusconi seeks status for collabo thugs

The bill would not only cover regular troops:

quote:
What has enraged the left is the inclusion in the bill of what a British historian, Denis Mack Smith, termed "semi-autonomous hooligan squads - some with their own private prisons and torture chambers". One such group called itself the Italian SS and wore a German uniform.

Although Mr Berlusconi persistently describes his government as "moderate" and "centre-right", the plan to honour the veterans of these units is regarded as a reminder of just how rightwing it is.

This would be absurd if it weren't, apparently, likely to happen, in which case it becomes disgraceful and outrageous.

It suggests that a lot of powerful people in Italy, and not just those in an openly neo-fascist party, really don't get it yet, doesn't it? Any view of history that does not flatly condemn Mussolini and the fascist governments is phony revisionist history. Some national reconciliation, especially with those who were in the regular forces, might fairly follow, but the condemnation has to come first.

Once again, the guy has "Berlusconied." When is it going to be possible to remove this silly man?
