BBC News:

quote:
France's national rail workers have begun an open-ended strike called in protest at President Nicolas Sarkozy's planned pension reforms.

Rail employees stopped work at 2000 (1900 GMT) in an action expected to affect thousands of commuters.

Utility workers are also set to strike. They may be joined by teachers and civil servants on 20 November. [...]

... Prime Minister Francois Fillon ... told parliament: "Millions of French people will be deprived of their fundamental freedom, the freedom of movement and even perhaps to work."

How quickly they forget:

Vive les grévistes! À bas Nicholas!

According to today's Globe, one French Civil servant does not support the strike because in the US, workers don't have such generous retirement benefits and the French need to "harmonize".

To the best of my limited knowledge there are countries without the benefits of any retirement. "Harmonization" for all is overdue (I guess).

Long live "harmony" (he cried from his rocking chair)!

Indeed.

How again does this strike and the protection of comfortable pensions for the privileged (and the privileged only) help France's unemployed, and especially her disadvantaged immigrant populations who have always been kept out of the work force?

How quickly we forget in Canada that we have no democracy. If our public servants did this they would be ordered back to work and then fined and jailed if they didn't comply.

quote:
RAIL: Seven of eight unions at the state-owned SNCF rail company began an open-ended strike on 13 November
PARIS METRO/BUS: Five of eight unions joined an open-ended strike on 14 November
ENERGY: Seven unions at state-owned EDF and GDF utilities strike on 14 November
PARIS OPERA HOUSE: Four unions representing staff join strike on 14 November. Open-ended strike by La Comedie Francaise, the state theatre

In Canada these are essential services that the right to strike has been removed from.
