I think I might actually sink to a new low and buy a television.

I've been shopping around and found that TVs are ridiculously affordable. All the better for reaching the masses and controlling their minds...

anyway. I know that Sony is one of the biggest neo-liberal corporations and would stoop to any low possible to make a buck... what about the others?

I think Zenith is an American brand - any better than the others?

Recommendations please?

Man, I'm sensing some serious guilt. Or are you being facetious?

If TV is that odious to you, why are you considering purchasing one?

Jesse - partially facetious, partially serious.

I've lived without a TV for the last four-five years. My brother had one that I used to watch movies on and I watched the federal election coverage - I had to buy an antenna to do that.

Now that I work in government I need to be up-to-date on issues a little more than before. Thus, I need to watch for issue spin just to monitor stories.

I have friends who say that every purchase of mine is a sellout issue. But then, we can't get together and watch activist movies if we don't have a TV!

back to the TV - I found a Sylvania model offered by Canadian Tire that is Energy Star compliant. I think I get a PST rebate from the Saskatchewan government for that - plus the whole saving energy thing is wonderful.

Get an ATI TV Wonder for about 60 bucks if you shop around and watch TV on your computer. You can record, hook it to a VCR, convert tapes to .mpg or vice versa, whatever. I don't know what their politics are, but their a Canadian company for what it's worth these days.

Most of the old American brand names are just stuck on various low-end Chinese manufactured electronic products these days.

Dr C's point is well taken. Buying a used TV set keeps it out of a landfill site for at least a few more years. There are lots of toxic chemicals and heavy metals in old electronic products...goodies like arsenic, cadmium and lead.

Another good suggestion especially if you've got a slightly larger monitor. Then when the commercials come on you can minimize the TV picture and catch up on your e-mail (or post on babble!)

Electronics manufacturing is a dirty business and most of it, particularly at the low end has moved to sweatshops. Don't know of any electronics manufacturer that is particularly ethical.

Higher-end products that are assembled in Japan will at least be put together by unionized workers though. Products assembled in Korea (Samsung, LG) will be produced by members of Korea's (highly repressed) union movement.

Zenith is actually the brandname purchased by LG for the North American market. Their products formerly sold under the Goldstar name in Canada.

Drew Carey had a habit of making fun of this on "Whose Line...".

e.g.:

"Tonight's show is in NakedVision for those of you watching on an American made television!"

Check out XS Cargo. As the name implies, they sell excess inventory from other stores, so the prices are very low. There are a few stores across Canada. http://www.xscargo.com/
