Leaked USian embassy memo paints grim picture of Iraq

quote:
A leaked cable from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad signed by the ambassador paints a grim picture of Iraq as a country disintegrating, in which the real rulers are the militias -- and the government counts for nothing.

Text of the leaked cable from the U.S. ambassador in Iraq to Secretary of State Rice.

The cable, signed by U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and sent to the State Department in Washington on June 6, is wholly at odds with the optimistic account of developments given by President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair in their recent visits to Iraq.

Iraqis employed by the U.S. Embassy live in fear that other Iraqis will find out who they are working for. "We have begun shredding documents printed out that show local staff surnames," the cable says. "In March a few staff approached us to ask what provisions would we make for them if we evacuate."

The United States and Britain have said they would withdraw their troops as the security situation improved, though the embassy memo suggests that it was, in fact, deteriorating.

This is kind of a tangent, but--they still send cables? Or is this word being used figuratively?

Thanks Jerry for a link to the actual memo.

The memo says the USAians are increasingly seen by ordinary Iraqis as not only an occupying power, but worse, as actively complicit in trying to weaken and destabilize Iraq. This memo really is a smoking gun.

The US does not need an exit strategy for Iraq. The Iraqis will provide them with one at the appropriate moment.

As Yogi said;its deja vu all over again. If the Iraqis throw the Americans out,no doubt, all the local employees will be abandoned...again.

Its very illuminating that despite the danger involved,Iraqis are desperate enough for employment to take the risk.

The Iraqiis will never throw the Amerikans out. Not with the US building not only their largest Embassy there, but also massive military bases within the borders of Iraq. The US has conquered the country, although they're nowhere close to actually controlling it. However, the Amerikans appear willing to keep sinking endless amounts of money and military lives to protect their investment, and they're expecting huge returns, in the form of access to Iraq oil reserves. That's the only reason they're there, whatever lies they expect everyone to believe.

It's just a matter of time before we see a repeat of the good old helicopter radio transmissions of April 1975:
