While gay rights activists in the U.S. push for the right to marry, lesbians in Jamaica are fighting for the right to live.

Local activists say women who step outside societal norms - by dressing "too manly" or having few male visitors, for example - risk threats of verbal and physical abuse. Women have reportedly been raped, beaten, murdered and forced out of their homes or jobs simply for being lesbians.

One woman, Karlene,
tells her story.

I fully understand that conditions for gay people are much worse in Jamaica than in continental North America... so am I being oversensitive by seeing an implication in that story's lede that says gays in the US ought to quit whining?

Well, that lede was written by queerday.com's editors. You could take it up with Philo, but I think maybe you're just having a "hair trigger" moment, Tape ol' buddy...

I had that same feeling when I first read the opening line this morning, Heph. It seemed like they were trivializing one struggle in comparison with the other, unarguably more threatening situation.

I guess it can be seen that way, but I dunno if that was the intention. Anyway, "Tape" knows Philo personally, so I'll let the two of them sort it out...

The article, sad as it is, is still worth reading...
