Hey everyone,
I'm moving on September 1 and am wondering what everyone thinks is the best way to do it -- I have hired movers and moved myself with a van, and frankly, I found both to be horrible experiences.

How have you moved in the past? And what ends up being the most economical and least emotionally trying?

I've tried just about everything myself and must agree with you. Moving is a pain in the ass!

The best way to move? That depends entirely on your situation. Do you have alot of furniture or other large items? Are you moving within the same town/city or are you moving *away*? Is it just you or are you moving a family? How many friends do you have with trucks or vans?

In general I've found moving to be the most, er, entertaining when I've had a group of friends and a bunch of cars or trucks. They are usually pretty easy to convince if you offer pizza and beer.

Use the opportunity to purge much of the stuff you've been collecting. Whenever I move, I end up tossing out tons of things (clothes - to salvation army, junk from drawers, furniture that needs to be retired). Anything that i don't see using in the next 6 months, I toss.
You end up purging about 20% of your stuff and you'll feel much better and ligther.

It's just a local move, but I only have friend with tiny cars. I tend toward hiring movers again, though it is such a gamble. Good movers will have this job done in less than three hours -- bad movers and it could take all day.
After this, I may never move again.

Some tips on moving.

1. Wrap dishes in clothes and towels.

2. Plastic dishes are best trasported in garbage bags.

3. Use the smaller LC boxes for books and the bigger toilet paper boxes for toys and produce boxes for pots and pans.

4. Make sure that the boxes are out of the way and try to get as the furnature as close to the door as possible.

5. If you live in an apartment, try to get most of the smaller peices of furnature or anything you can possibly get down a flight of stairs yourself into the downstairs landing or onto the grass outside the door. That way movers take less time to load the truck and friends do not wear their legs out moving the furnature down the stairs.

6. It should take no more than 2 days to unpack all your belongings.

BWAHAHahahaha! I nearly fell off my chair when I read that. I think I've only ever known one person who has come close to that. For myself two to three weeks is more realistic... and I don't even have that much stuff!

JayCee - Have you thought about renting a van or truck? Then you wouldn't have to worry about movers. I rented from National the last time I moved. It was cheap and convenient. Just make sure you book soon if you decide to rent.

I unpacked all my belongings in two days, in the last two moves I made. It's hard not to when you've got a child under 3.

Purging? Ha ha ha ha ha you are such an innocent child! I have crap that hasn't seen the light of day for years. Just because it is permanantly stuffed in the furthest reaches of the garage or the darkest dankest corner of the basement, doesn't mean I will ever throw it out!

I have and will stupidly move crap I will never need from one garage to the next without hesitation no matter the cost, monitary or bodily, no matter what logic or sensible argument is leveled at me.

And in this I shall do my part to keep young and healthy lads in back breaking low paying moving jobs as I will never keep this up if I have to move this shit! Which may be next year.

The ideal way to move, although not the most practical:

Sell everything you own, drive to the new place, and buy all new stuff.

Almost, Doc.

My recommendation: The ideal way to move, and the most practical (long term): Sell everything you don't absolutely need, and take with you only what you can't possibly live without.

The theme of the week: "don't buy the shit!"

It's good to have friends help out, even if you hire movers, at least to help you direct traffic... I have also noticed that once you approach, and especially after you hit, 30, friends become markedly less enthusiastic about helping you move. Especially if it requires heavy lifing.

Hire movers, go for a small company where you can get a sense of what the work ethic really is. I hired a guy who I went to film school with in the last move... It was a little wild, but hey, he was the most highly educated mover out there....

the happy medium between tiny cars and movers is: rent a U-Haul, get the friends together and move yourself. If you have a critical mass of friends (last move I had about 10-11 helping out) you can do it in a few hours, no problem.

Just MAKE SURE you have everything packed before moving day. A couple of times I've moved friends who hadn't done much packing beforehand. It was a disaster....and you can bet I will find some other obligation next time they decide to move.

This is an obvious hint, but the liquor store is by far the best place for boxes. Call ahead to find out when their shipments come in.

rent a U-Haul,

Don't use U-Haul. Just recently a bunch have been pulled off the road by the OPP due to safety problems.

Thanks everyone -- that's great stuff. I think my decision has been made for me, in that both my roommates and I have to work the day we move. Movers it is, I'm afraid.
Anyone want to buy some...stuff?
