I'm part of a collective that hosts a radio programme by, for and about women. I was wondering if anyone might be intereted in being interviewed (by telephone) on the topic of your choice. The collective has unfortunately suffered a brain drain in the past year as a few core members have moved. That leaves the few of us left scrambling to even keep the show alive. So really, ANYTHING GOES.
If anyone has suggestions for spoken word audio material, that would be cool too...
I'm just digging for ideas.

WINGS - Women's International News Gathering Service - is a good source for audio material (I think they're in Texas...I'm not sure). They send out tapes on a subscription basis. Or at least they used to. Been a few years since I was involved in alternative radio.

A good resource for independent radio is "Alternative Radio" in Boulder, Colorado.

South End Press and Common Courage Press carry a number of writers who might fit your format. You can get both review copies of books and authors' phone numbers from them.

David Barsamian, right? I met him at a conference in Vancouver several years ago. He was doing a workshop on interview skills. He was quite good.

You met David? Lucky you. He sent me a little note last Christmas...jeez, I just remembered that. I don't know what I did with it.

He has an article on the rabble front page right now.

Yes, at the time it was quite a thrill for me to meet him. Radio colleagues of mine played his Alternative Radio tapes on the air, and attending his workshop on interviewing skills was one of the primary reasons I went to the Vancouver conference.

Gawd, I haven't read The Progressive in years. I really should get my shit together and read something other than Harper's. I particularly enjoy the way Pilger frames his contempt for mainstream journalism:

quote:
Many journalists now are no more than channelers and echoers of what Orwell called the official truth. They simply cipher and transmit lies.
These are indeed Orwellian times.

Pilger still does shows for Alternative Radio. I think he did one recently on "The Myth of the Liberal Media." Anyway, many commentators on AR discuss media issues from a perspective sympathetic to babblers.

I started a thread on AR in "Media" but nobody has commented.

Thanks for the tips, folks! I was familiar with WINGS - we already broadcast their material. The AR link was especially helpful - we can now download their stuff for free for radio broadcast. I'm excited to listen to a lot of their programmes. Thanks again.
