The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan has done at least 3 things in the international system. It has discredited the United States, its foreign policy, and it has demonstrated that it cannot face the world without nuclear weapons; the occupation of Afghanistan has demonstrated the weakness of NATO and that it is no longer relevant; because the United States has failed in Iraq, countries such as Iran and North Korea have been emboldened to pursue their interests without feeling too intimidated by the United States.
It seems to be the United States that is being isolated as countries no longer feel pressured to operate their foreign policies within the dichotomy of "us vs. them" created by George W. Bush following the 11 September attacks. His administration attempted to make terrorism the dominant world issue, but it did not work. I'm thinking of the NATO states who will not commit, or who make quasi-committments, to the fighting in Afghanistan; Russia is confronting the United States on some issues; Pakistan no longer seems like a disciplined ally of the United States; Great Britain is gradually pulling its troops from Iraq; and etc.
