Vancouver sex assault suspect faces new charges

quote:
VANCOUVER - Ten new charges were laid Thursday against Don Bakker, a Vancouver man accused of sexually assaulting six prostitutes. Bakker is now accused of 16 offences, including sexual assault with a weapon, sex assault causing bodily harm, assault and unlawful confinement.

I'm kind of curious as to why this hasn't gotten much, if any attention on rabble/babble, but maybe I just couldn't find anything in searches.
[edited to add: i wasn't sure where this should go... so i put it here. if it's in the wrong place, sorry]

I was kind of thinking more along the lines of discussing why this hasn't had any coverage on rabble/babble. I've noticed that CBC had very minimal coverage on this, as did the papers. They spent several minutes on the people in the Tory leadership race or some such thing, but only about thirty seconds on this story. I know that it's the same old thing, but still I am appalled that the documented violence against dozens of women and children gets less media attention than who's going to run the Tories.

For the record, I don't really know how to respond to the above posts; I have heard little about the case aside from what was posted above, so I don't think I am able to.

Um, what the heck...?

Capturing the Friedmans was an excellent movie, by the way, but it really has nothing to do with this thread.

If the Vancouver sex assaults were getting more coverage than the tory leadership race, then there'd be many here accusing the media of being sensationalist and salacious.

I think the real story here is how this went on for so long, and that will be a story that will take time to assemble and tell.

I suspect Jakob's interest in the Friedmans has to do with their last name. Had the film been about Julius Streicher's sex crimes or about Adolf Hitler's abusive relationship with his niece I doubt Jakob would be concerned.

Ugh, not streicher please!! The man may have been unfairly convicted at nuremburg but he was still a sick sob who is better off in the next world instead of this one. The geli raubal case is more interesting dues to the aura of corruption and secrecy around her death, very jfk-ish kind of. Now back to my book Mud blood, and poppycock.

It concerns me that the abused women never came forward. It makes me wonder how much of this is really going on. (Probably a painfully naive question to a sex-trade worker.)

I don't care how much media attention this matter gets. I do care how much of the police and prosecutor's attention it gets.

How can we beat these men out of the woodwork? How many of them are out there?

Did anyone see the CBS report on the child sex tourism trade in Cambodia this weekend? It was frightening.

Don't the statistics show that most people do not report sexual assaults? Why would these numbers differ for a sex trade worker? I know they circulate 'bad date' info but thats probably as much as most would do
