Hey kids.

So I got this the other day:

quote:
Dear Lucy,

re: Documentary Film on abortion debate

You and your site were brought to my attention through the CBC (Canada) piece called 'Silent No More'.

I'm looking for women and men for that matter who are willing to share about their part in the abortion experience of their own or of a partner.

Joyce Arthur of Canada's Pro-Choice Action Network graciously shared a little of her story as part of a larger interview we did in Vancouver.

I see on clarification.ca that you're collecting affidavits, how is that going?

In terms of interviews, at the moment, people in or travelling to Quebec and Ontario would be the most convenient for us to work with so put the word out and let us know.

Tell Joyce I say hi and I'll be getting a film update out to soon.

Thanking you kindly,

J.S.C. (Jackie) Hetherington

So I googled the email address and found this.

So THEN I googled "John Hetherington" and found THIS:

quote:
It's a story John Hetherington has told many times. Now, his sense of calling to be a 'voice for the voiceless' unborn has taken him, his wife and child across the nation to the city that represents both his own beginnings, and the beginnings of Canada's legalization of the procedure that might have ended his life.

The nation's first openly illegal abortion clinic was operating in Montreal at the time of Hetherington's conception. Had she been left on her own, his mother says, "I probably would have had to make that choice.".

So I emailed back and said "I don't want to be in an anti-choice piece, thanks!" and he had the fucking gall to write back with:

quote:
Hi Again Audra,

I'm puzzled by your response. Where did I say the film would be taking a postition on the debate?

This film is on my journey through the abortion debate from a point of not being on either side of the debate, not having given it any thought before beginning the journey.

Have a good one.....

I AM SO ANGRY. What a manipulative lying fucker.

Spread the word!

Are you sure it's the same person, Audra? I followed your links but maybe I need to have it better explained to me how Jackie Heatherington becomes John Heatherington...?

For sure.

What a creep. And look at the disingenuous "Jackie" signature on the original message. Jackie. Yeah, sure. Jackie Kennedy? Jackie Bisset? Well, no, actually: John.

Michelle, Johns are often Jacks, and there have been famous male Jackies -- Robinson, eg -- although I doubt very much that many white men are calling themselves Jackie these days. And I'd suspect that this John does that only when he's trying to manipulate women like audra.

Yup. Annoying! Good for you, Audra, for catching that. Are you going to write to Joyce Arthur and tell her she's been had?

(P.S. I knew that about "Jackie" and "John" since "Jackie" can be a diminuitive of "Jack" which is a diminuitive of "John". I just didn't see how, in that evidence trail, that "Jackie" had definitely become "John".

Okay I was getting pretty confused about the term "abortion survivor"

So clever dickens here is a survivor of something that his mom MIGHT have thought about doing if she'd had the opportunity!?

It's good that he found it within himself to forgive her for almost having the opportunity to murder him back when he didn't exist. The dude's a champion, really.

Oh hey look he's got a kid. (I can't entirely believe anyone let him Inside The Box!) I guess there must be some pretty serious resentment building up there, considering all the later improvements in access that the child's mother no doubt never but might have considered taking advantage of.

Audra, if this is the true face of the enemies of choice... that's pretty encouraging. I mean sure, they're sneaky. But they also pass out doing interpretive dance pieces.

Oh wait I see his mom did in fact take some mysterious pills.

Well whatever. I stand behind the gist of my derision and scorn.

skdadl> Are you certain he's white? His mom's from the Caribbean.

You can be white and from the Caribbean. One of my white male friend's hails from Bahamas, as does his family.

I got a call purporting to be a telephone survey quite a while ago. The question: "are you in favour of abortion?" If I'd been faster on the draw I MIGHT have said "yes, I think everyone should have one, especially men. It's such a beautiful experience." All I managed at the time was to hang up.

Of course you can be. But I wouldn't presume it!
