... in the bidding for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Sochi, Russia narrowly defeated PyeongChang, South Korea by a vote of 51 to 47 to win the right to host the games. Salzburg, Austria was dropped off after the first ballot (PyeongChang - 36, Sochi - 34, Salzburg - 25).

Here's the official version of what happened.

Is it moral to award the Olympics to a country with a repressive regime?

Victory for Russia in the Caucasus has generally been no victory at all for Caucasians themselves. We'll see how the Olympics pans out. I wonder if some visiting tourists might like to go for a stopover in Chechnya and see how well Russian development in the Caucasus is going these days.

Gee, I wonder if we can con them into taking the burden of the 2010 games off the shoulders of us on the West Coast, too? Do you think....?

Let's hope so.

I'm a tennis fan. Women's tennis in particular. I always thought it was wrong for the WTA to award tournaments to countries like the UAE or India which have such poor women's and gay rights records.

It's somewhat the same thing here. Western leaders have been sort of pretending Russia is now a reformed, okay country, but it's really not at all. But awarding the Olympics to Sochi helps the regime continue to seem legitimate. I don't think it's right.

Trying saying that internationally and you'll have a billion Indians down your throat.

Regardless, the Winter/White Games lack international legitimacy in that you can only practice most of those sports in northern climes with lots of money for equipment.

That's yet another issue.

You know what? Hoobie-fucking-boobie. The winter games are about snow, ice, and generally freezing your feet off.

I'm sure when it starts snowing for six months a year in the Sahara that the nations who live there will want to start playing.

In fact, given that it seems like snow has sure helped drive the technological evolution of the north, maybe it wouldn't hurt them in the long run.

And it is easier to practice most of the Summer Olympic sports in southern/tropical climes.

Your point?

No kidding, especially since, as a rule, northerners are not acclimatized to handle the southern heat.

Perhaps their energy might be better focused on eliminating my criticisms.

And since noone else has commented on this, this should go into the Babbler hall of shame as one of the stupidest thread titles ever posted here.
