I think I might advise him to try a year of university and then see how he feels about it. If he has a taste of it, then goes and does other stuff, he might have a better idea of whether or not to return to university later. I appreciated university better when I went back after several years to get a second degree; but in those times I did not have to build up as big a debt as students do now and so could take longer deciding what I really wanted to do.
