So he says in a speech on national security at the University of Colorado.

quote:
During the speech, Ashcroft caused an uproar when he declared Guantanamo Bay was a “good place” for detainees. In addition, he defended the torture tactic of waterboarding:

quote:
Ashcroft also responded to questions from the audience. The first question came from a woman who asked if Ashcroft would be willing to be subjected to waterboarding.

“The things that I can survive, if it were necessary to do them to me, I would do,” he said.

Ashcroft apparently believes that torture should be allowed as long as it doesn’t kill him.

So the standard set by the former US Attorney General is that it isn't torture if it doesn't kill you.

The article also notes that after WW II Japanese officials were prosecuted for torture for using this practice.

I wonder how long the list will be of persons Bush gives blanket pardons to just before leaving office.

You bring the water, I'll get the board

When the American government recovers from this collective insanity (fingers crossed) will collective amnesia prevail, or are they capable of learning from this?

Yeah, but only on his twig and berries. I'm sure he'd like that.

That brings up an interesting question: wouldn't extreme S&M play count as "voluntary torture?"

Is it the lack of consent that makes it torture? So that, if Ashcroft is consenting, he's not really talking about torture. Rather, he's just a sub waiting for a Dom to show him who's boss with a waterboard?

Just musing.

That's quite a coincidence as I'm willing to waterboard him.

Assuming that this practice is as inhumane as all acounts I have read, I find it problematic that so many people would be 'willing' to administer such activities as long as it involves their political opponents. Of course it is merely rhertoric, but in the same way that we generally avoid racialized humour, I think anti-human rights humour should undergo the same test of thoughfullness.
